Wildflower planting at Whitfield Gardens, Saturday 7 April 2018

Packets of seeds.

There are five collections of seeds in the Grow Wild seed kit.

Following up from our winter planting, we have been successful with an application for native wildflower seeds which Camden parks are encouraging Friends’ groups to get involved with.

Come and join our planting morning this Saturday when we’ll be sowing five collections of wildflower seeds in an area of Whitfield Gardens that we’ve specially prepared.

We are also going to plant some native shrubs to provide a rich habitat and a source of food for birds and other wildlife. We’ve got Blackthorn, Dog Rose, Field Maple, Hazel, Wild Cherry, and Hawthorn to plant as individual shrubs and also for creating hedging. (How to plant a mixed hedgerow. [pdf])

If you have a spade or fork please bring these along to help us plant the shrubs. All the planting will be native trees, shrubs and flowers, as these are best for supporting biodiversity. Please contact us if you you need advice. (We are following the list of plants as suggested in Camden’s Biodiversity Action Plan: Species Suggestions.)

Meet at 10.00am Saturday 7 April at Fitzrovia Neighbourhood Centre, 39 Tottenham Street, London W1T 4RX to prepare the seeds, and organise. Then we will plant them from 10.30am at Whitfield Gardens. It won’t take more than 20 minutes but you are welcome to stay longer to help with the shrub and hedge planting, and some garden maintenance and clearing. Please bring gloves and sturdy shoes or boots if you want to get involved, and garden tools if you want to plant shrubs.
